A brief history of Barden Mill

Built in 1920, Barden Mill typifies the changes within the textile industry.

Our original weaving business, which made corset fabric and mattress ticking, employed over 100 people. In the 1960's the looms were taken out of the Mill (as they were in many mills throughout Burnley) and Barden Mill became a warehouse for imported goods. As some of these items were only half-made, we employed many of the original staff in a finishing department to complete the garment before it went to the high street stores.

Barden Mill Shop was opened to clear some of the excess stock and it has since become our principle business. This has meant that at least most of the Mill is still standing (unlike over 140 Cotton Mills in this area which have been demolished since 1950)... and we able to employ over 50 people in our current business!

The 4 storey section of the Mill (which was falling into the road) was cleared in 1997 and the Mill Shop as we know it today was re-opened on 24th September 1997 with a Fashion Show attended by Tina Hobley of Coronation Street fame.

A new 140 seater Tea Room and Wharf for canal boats has been added in 2001 so today we are trading in over 30,000 sq ft offering bargains throughout the store and 1 hour boat trips aboard the Barden Broomstick.

A wonderful selection of ladieswear, menswear and children's clothes plus shoes, bedding, towels, fabric (including curtain making), books, pictures, lighting, mirrors, cookware, glass and china await you in the store. For even more value we have also added some market stalls in the last few months.

Barden Mill now offers a great day out for all the family involving shopping for bargains, excellent home made food and boat trips on the canal with lovely views towards Pendle Hill.
